What is Microblading and should you try it?

In the past few years, perfect brows have become a necessity for women (and some men!). But what if you don’t have time to spend two hours in front of a mirror every day? Luckily, there is an alternative to painting them on every morning or to going to get them waxed and dyed once a month. Microblading.
Microblading is a semi-permanent make up technique. Through the manual process of inserting pigment into the upper layers of skin, the desired fullness and shape of the eyebrows is created resulting in a natural and flawless look as the hair effect is recreated on the skin.
We spoke to Marilen Montenegro, interior stylist, blogger and full time mum, who had this treatment done roughly one year ago.
What prompted you to try this treatment?
“I really had sparse eyebrows and it’s always bothered me that I’d have to spend a few minutes doing my eyebrows each day.”
Many micro blading specialists agree that microblading is most popular with people who have over plucked their brows over the years and have been left with little hair. Also great for people who have lighter brows, Microblading is very popular because it means they don’t need to draw them on every day.
Where did you go to have it done? Were you happy with this decision?
“I went to MiBrows in Causeway Bay. I was extremely happy, the therapist was very professional and made sure everything was perfectly even.”

What is the process?
“(The process takes) about two to four hours depending on work needed. MiBrows starts off by measuring so everything is even.”
1. The brow area will be shaped by threading the hairs, cleaning up the area and preparing it for the treatment.
2. Then the area will be numbed which usually takes around 40 minutes (this depends on where you go for the treatment and which topical anaesthesia the specialist uses).
3. The specialist will then begin measuring the area around the brows, taking into account face shape, symmetry, facial features etc.
4. Then the needling process begins! The pigment is gently implanted using featherweight strokes. Each stroke is a superficial line in the skin where the colour pigment seeps in and settles.
5. The specialist will then add a final layer of pigment that stays on for five minutes and then will clean the area.
6. In six to eight weeks there will be a top-up session to fill in any gaps where the pigment hasn’t taken or healed properly.

What is the aftercare?
“You can’t wet your brows for three to five days. Dry shampoo will be your friend. Never pick and peel the scabs.”
Points to consider after Microblading:
– Use a clean pillowcase
– No picking or scratching
– No facials, botox, or peels for four weeks
– Avoid exercise for one week
– Avoid direct sun for one week
– Avoid long, steamy showers for 10 days
– Avoid swimming for 10 days
– Don’t wear any make-up or use skincare on your brows until they’ve healed completely
How long do the brows last for?
“Mine lasted for eight months before fading gently.”
They should last for around 12 to 18 months until they fade completely.
How much does it cost?
“About HK$3,000-4,000 I think. Please verify with Mimi.”
Depending on where you go for this treatment, it can cost anywhere between $1,000 and $10,000.

Does it hurt?
“Not at all. They put a topical anaesthesia.”
Do you need to have a touch up after the initial procedure?
“Yes this is to ensure colour and shape is right.”
Did this procedure live up to your expectations? / What are your after thoughts about the process?
“Definitely! I love waking to a no makeup look now.”
Do you have any advice for people who are thinking about trying this treatment?
“Go for it and do your research for the best place for it.”
Microblading seems to be a practical trend that everyone is dying to try, so why not give it a go!?
